John and Joanne took up ballroom dancing by chance on a visit to Caesar's Club, which was a hype of entertaining activities catering for the residents of Petaling Jaya in the hey days back in 1988.
They caught the bug of ballroom dancing while watching dancers doing the tango at the ballroom floor. John particularly took notice of one senior couple in his 50's who were dancing the tango with immense staccato action. He immediately felt for it and then chided himself that what that couple can do, he can. With that notion, he and Joanne went to enquire about classes and immediately signed up for the beginners section.
After learning the waltz for 3 months, John and Joanne got their first taste of competition organized by Caesar Club. Although they did not make into the finals, it was an experience which served them in various other championships with good results.
While they were learning their ballroom dances, they also joined the Rock and Roll classes. Within 6 months, they were champion in the “Caesar Club Rock and Roll Open Championships 1989”. They then decided to concentrate on the Ballroom Modern Standard dances.
Since then they have never look back and continue to learn from the best teachers in town and also from top international coaches from UK, Europe, Taiwan, China and many others.
